Sleep to Lose Weight?

sleepNot surprising when you don’t get quality sleep you feel like crap.  But it can also cause weight gain.  Why?  Michael J Breus, PhD from WebMD in his article “Can’t Shed Those Pounds? A lack of zzzzs can affects your ability to lose weight” gives these 2 reasons:

  1. Makes you feel hungry even if you are full. Sleep loss has been shown to affect the secretion of cortisol, a hormone that regulates appetite. As a result, individuals who lose sleep may continue to feel hungry despite adequate food intake.
  2. Increases fat storage. Sleep loss may interfere with the body’s ability to metabolize carbohydrates, which leads to high levels of blood sugar. Excess blood sugar promotes the overproduction of insulin, which can lead to the storage of body fat and insulin resistance, a critical step into the development of diabetes. (Breus, 2003)

It’s also very important to make sure that you’re also eating right. Some people think just starving themselves to death is the way to do it. Your body actually goes into storage mode and slows down your metabolism. You start feeling fatigued because your body is trying to conserve energy. Sleeping enough is important but so is eating right and of course exercise.

During sleep and rest days you also build muscle as your body repairs the damage from weight training. Not getting enough rest and break days means burnout and soreness and possibly injury.
