The Big Apple

appleApples are good for you.  Tosca Reno advises this as an evening snack if you are hungry.  I read on Healthzone.ca about apples and thought I’d share.  From the article “Pack these for your next picnic“:

“One easy way to keep your gut happy is to reach for an apple. The type of fibre in apples – called pectin – appears to both bump up colon-protective compounds and clamp down on dangerous ones.

Apple pectin increases levels of a fatty acid called butyrate, which not only keeps colon tissue healthy, but also slows the production of a cancer-causing substance. Red Delicious ones may give you extra health bonuses. A study of eight different apple varieties found that Red Delicious came out on top for certain phytochemicals that may further protect you from cancer and heart disease. Some of these protective nutrients are in the skin, so no need to peel; just wash them well (three times) and dig in.”
