50 Ways to Cut 500 Calories a Day

From MSN.com, 50 Ways to Cut 500 Calories a Day.  Some interesting ones…

Limit dinner guests. Eating with seven or more other guests can make you eat 96 percent more food, says Brian Wansink, Ph.D., author of Mindless Eating. That’s like doubling your dinner! Dine with fewer guests to save 500 or more calories.

Build a lean burrito—and you’ll save 630 calories. The reduced calorie options add up to 490 calories—down from 1,120.  Here’s how:

  • Instead of a flour tortilla, order lettuce.
  • Instead of cheese, order guacamole.
  • Instead of ground beef, shredded pork.
  • Instead of black beans, order pinto beans.
  • Instead of rice, order corn salsa
  • Instead of salsa, order pico de gallo

Tap your foot. Your skinnier friends are probably fidgeters, who burn up to 350 calories a day just by tapping their feet or being restless. Try it for a few days. Walk around while you’re on the phone, or tap out a tune with your hands or feet (in the privacy of your own office, of course).

Fatty Foods Are Addictive

“A new study in rats suggests that high-fat, high-calorie foods affect the brain in much the same way as cocaine and heroin.”

Atkins Diet Gets An Update

The high protein low carb diet born of the 70s and highly critized (especially since the author died of heart disease!) gets an update.  The new version includes more veggies but it still pretty low carb.  I guess they are trying to address some of the criticisms.  Check it out here.

Steaming Vegetables

Vegetables are a staple for any diet…I’ve upped my intake and now steam my veggies in the microwave.  I take about 3 meals and 1 snack to school/work with me (per my nutritionist).

From SouthbeachDiet.com:

On the Stovetop:

  1. Add one or two inches of water to a large pot and bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Prepare your vegetables for cooking: After washing thoroughly, cut them into equal-sized pieces to ensure even cooking.
  3. Place your steaming basket (a specially designed tool that fits inside a pot and holds food just above the surface of the water) in the pot of water. Or use a bamboo steamer, which sits above steaming water
  4. Add vegetables and cover.
  5. Cook until vegetables reach the desired texture. In general, most vegetables require only one or two minutes of steaming, since steam is even hotter than boiling water. If you like your veggies tender, cook a little longer; if you prefer crunchy veggies, cook for a shorter period. Be careful not to overcook, or you’ll end up with mushy vegetables.
  6. Carefully remove the lid (remember, the steam can burn your hands!) and take the vegetables out of the basket. Serve them immediately with a South Beach Diet–friendly sauce or seasoning, including lemon juice and any spice (that doesn’t contain added sugar) or with fresh chopped herbs, such as parsley or basil.

In the Microwave:

  1. Prepare your vegetables for cooking: After washing thoroughly, cut vegetables into equal-sized pieces to ensure even cooking.
  2. If you have the plastic bags made especially for microwave steaming, follow the directions on the box; otherwise place vegetables in a large, microwave-safe bowl (a glass bowl, for example) and follow the rest of the steps below.
  3. Add water to cover your vegetables — the water should be shallow in the bowl.
  4. Cover the bowl with microwave-safe plastic wrap and fold back in one spot to allow steam to vent.
  5. Microwave on high for four to eight minutes (depending on the thickness of the vegetables) or until your veggies reach the desired texture. Serve with a South Beach Diet–recommended sauce or seasoning.

Work Out (Harder) in Less Time

Study from McMaster University in Ontario:

“Short-duration, high-intensity training sessions may be just as effective as longer duration, less intense exercise. Simply put, you can do your workout in just 20 minutes and still see the benefits.”

Kraft Saucy Mexican Chicken

I am making this for dinner tomorrow night.  It looks good, looks easy and is healthy.

  • 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breast halves (4 small breasts)
  • 1 jar  (16 oz.) sala
  • 1 can (15 oz.) black beans, rinsed
  • 1 cup  shredded cheeze, cheddar

Cook chicken in nonstick skillet on medium-high heat 4 min. on each side or until browned on both sides.   I made up a batch of chicken and just used the cooked chicken instead…turned out fine.  Add salsa and beans. Bring to boil; cover. Simmer on medium-low heat 5 min. or until chicken is done (165ºF).  Top with cheese. Remove from heat. Let stand, covered, 5 min. or until cheese is melted.

Avoid Workout Burnout

I’m guilty of some of these….from MSN.com:

The Honeymoon You never miss a workout in attempt to drop a few dress sizes in a month. Solution? Less can be more.  Don’t expect too much too soon (see below) and your body actually builds muscle on the rest days!  Burn more fat the day after than during the cardio!  Watch this video about the day-after-fat-burn.

Disenchantment You don’t see results right away so you give up. Solution? Set mini goals, take pictures and measurements every week.

Stalling Boredom with the workouts leads to any excuse to not work out.  Solution? Change up your routines, the machines you use, sign up for a 5K run, play some sports, even 21 at the local schoolground hoop.

Frustation and Surrender Life gets in the way and you work out less as fitness slips from priority.  Solution? Make a schedule and stick to it.  For 1 week.  Then make a new one for 2 weeks, changing things as needed…maybe work only one body part per day, with 15min on a machine…or do a 2 day split  and cardio on off days.  Or plan out meals and see how it goes!
