Kindergarten Lunches Get Failing Grade

“When dietitian Shannon Crocker went into four kindergarten classrooms in two Ontario elementary schools to check the contents of the children’s lunch boxes, she was dismayed by what she found.

“Many were packed with poor food and drink choices such as cold hot dogs, gummy treats, sugary fruit beverages and packaged cookies,” says the Ancaster, Ont., mother of two.

Kindergarten classes were chosen because Ontario began introducing its new Early Learning Program in September, which means thousands of four- and five-year-olds now attend school for a full day.

Guidelines for Fitness

Here is what the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommends for adults in order to maintain a healthy fitness level:

  • At least 2 hours and 30 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic workouts, such as brisk walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic workouts like running or jogging
  • For even better results, about 5 hours a week of moderate workouts or 2 hours and 30 minutes of vigorous workouts
  • On top of these aerobic activities, strength-training workouts at least twice a week that involve all major muscle groups

“Unfit? Just 10 minutes of exercise alters your body chemistry…The bare minimum of exercise can trigger a profound and lasting effect in a person’s body chemistry, a team of researchers has found.

Even after only 10 minutes of exercise on a treadmill or stationary bicycle, the bloodstreams of unfit and average test subjects filled with higher levels of the metabolites that process fat, sugar and amino acids, said Massachusetts General’s Dr. Gregory Lewis, an author of the study.

Levels shot up 98 per cent in the average healthy adults, as compared with 60 to 70 per cent in the less fit.”  To read more click here!

A typical workout includes “I train five to six days per week,” Erin says. “Usually a combined bodybuilding-style weight workout four times per week, functional powerlifting once or twice, and sprints and plyo on the track.”

Of all the exercises she does, her top training moves right now are reverse hyperextensions, weighted bridges and single-leg squats. “Gotta work those glutes!”
