8 Foods To Pack On Muscle

Men’s Health is very straight forward with what you need to do to build muscle.  Oxygen Magazine had an interesting article a few years ago about how to lose weight like a man.  It was funny how men can and will just do what you are supposed to.  More exercise – shoot some hoops.  Eat better – cut out the fast food and junk food.  Build muscle – up the reps and the weight.  I wish I had that determination!

Check out the 8 foods here!

Advice From Jack LaLanne

“Al Gore may not have invented the Internet, but Jack LaLanne, who passed away on January 23, did invent modern fitness.

Sometimes called the “Godfather of fitness,” Jack was born in 1914, a time when circumstances ensured we got enough exercise. Back then, people engaged in a great deal of physical labour and activity in their everyday lives, but as mid-century approached technology started doing more of our work for us (not too mention junk food became more prevalent), and as a society we started to get fatter.

Jack saw it coming, and worked hard to do something about it. He opened one of the first health clubs in the United States in 1936 and launched a daily fitness television show in the ’50s that lasted for 34 years. He combated the medical establishment of the time, which considered vigorous exercise dangerous, and became well-known for completing numerous implausible feats of strength and endurance to prove that his training methods made people healthier and more functional.”

Jack LaLanne was truly a leader and he passed away recently.  His life is quite remarkable, and he left us with lessons on how to live your life.   Click here for Jack’s lessons!

Stronger Without Lifting Weights

I am a fan of working out at home…it’s convenient and comfortable and I can do it watching TV.  Men’s Health put out this article on how to gain strength without lifiting any weights.  I think it applies well to women because some workout beginners are more likely to work out at home (who maybe haven’t invested in home equipment) as well as moms.  Here are Men’s Health 5 ways to increase strength without weights:

  1. Increase the distance.  Lengthen your body and the exercise will become harder.  For example, raise your arms above your head while lunging.
  2. Go farther.  Place front or back feet on a step when lunging.  Instead of up/down reps, go half-up, back down, half-up, and so on.  Put your feet up on a stability ball or chair while doing pushups.
  3. Dissipate elastic energy.  Slow down the reps so that when you curl, the down motion is slow.  Apply the same for each exercise you can.  Make the return motion count more by slowing it down.
  4. More in more than one direction.  Twist your torso to the right or left in exercises such as the lunge, situp, and pushup.
  5. Decrease the body surface that touches the floor.  It’s hard to do a pushup, harder to do it on fingertips.  Lift your heels during a crunch.

Put The Argument To Rest

“A new study from the College of New Jersey confirms that pumping iron can make your cardio workout more effective.  Participants who performed an intense weight workout before riding a stationary bike burned more fat during their cardio session than those who pedaled but skipped the weights.  The weight training may trigger fat-buring hormones, scientists speculate.”

I Want To Look Like That Guy

I say this movie and it was great.  It’s a regular guy that wants to look like the guys in the ads…you know, the ones for muscle building weight loss miracles.  This is his own documentary of him doing that.  It’s quite shocking how he can do it, and how normal people (that aren’t into serious fitness competitions) should not think that we get attain or maintain that level of fitness.  Hell, not even the competitors can maintain that when they aren’t training for a show.  And he shows this at the end of the movie!  And yes, the pic above is him!  He also has interviews you can google.

Check it out here.
