“Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin” Time Magazine

This is an interesting article on why dieting alone might be better for losing weight (not saying getting fit and toned) than exercising.  Just like what I mentioned in this post!

Stop Smoking and Gained Weight?

I sometimes smoke.  When I drink I smoke but as you probably know I abhor both now.  I figure I only do it depending on the company, usually once a week or less, depending on what is going on.  I wasn’t/am not “addicted” like some people are.  I can’t stand the smell of second hand smoke from someone near me on the sidewalk.  Cigs in the morning make me want to throw up.  Anyways, here’s from EverdayHealth.com:

Q: I realize smoking is considered unhealthy under any circumstances, but how does it affect metabolism? Any tips for quitting without going on a major eating binge?

A:  Smoking doesn’t affect metabolism, but it does serve as a form of oral fixation. For that reason, people tend to eat more when they quit smoking and therefore gain weight. However, I recommend making exercise your new addiction. Exercise releases endorphins and serotonin, which make you feel good and will help combat the tendency to overeat. For those attempting to quit smoking…PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do. I have lost loved ones to this disgusting habit, and I am so bitter I can barely stand it. Death from smoking is totally preventable; it is a horrible way to die.

I have turned many people on to a book by Alan Carr, The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, and everyone swears by it. Check it out — and please do whatever you can to quit. Ask yourself this question: Do I want 20 extra years to see my grandchildren grow up, or a cigarette? Dude…come on!

What Your Tongue says About Your Health

I was watching “You Are What You Eat” on the W Network today while walking on the treadmill.  If you’ve never seen this show, it’s a UK show where a doctor takes an overweight person, goes through what they eat in a week, checks them out physically and overhauls their diet.  She checks their tongue, eyes, skin, poop (Yep!) and blood.

I was curious about what my tongue said about me.  Answer yes or no to the following and click here for the interpretation:

  1. Does your tongue have a line down the middle?
  2. Does you tongue have teeth marks round the side?
  3. Does you tongue have a bright red tip?
  4. Is your tongue sore?
  5. Does you tongue appear dotted all over?

I have teeth marks around the side which means a weak spleen.  I do feel tired but I thought because I’m so active.  I had mono a few years ago as well.  So what to eat? Aduki bean soup beetroot, celery, fennel, dill, chicken, garlic, kidney beans, parsley, pumpkins and turnips.  Click here for more on what your tongue says about your health.

Aduki Bean Stew, from Kake’s (Vegan) Cookery Site, serves 3

  • 125g (4oz) aduki beans, soaked and cooked (save the cooking liquid, 40-60min to cook)
  • soya margarine to saute
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped or crushed
  • 1 medium leek, washed, halved lengthways and sliced thickly
  • 1 large carrot, cut into long julienne strips
  • 250g (8oz) mushrooms, cut into chunks unless very small
  • 1 Tbsp sweet paprika
  • 2 Tbsp wholemeal (wholewheat) flour
  • chilli sauce (eg Encona or Tabasco) to taste
  • 1 tsp dark vegetable stock powder
  • 1 Tbsp good soy sauce (eg Kikkoman)
  • 1 Tbsp tomato puree (paste)
  • 1 x 400g (14oz) can chopped tomatoes
  • To finish: freshly-ground black pepper and chopped fresh parsley to taste

Saute the onion in the margarine until softened and starting to brown. Add the garlic, leek, carrot and mushrooms, and cook for another 5 minutes, until starting to soften. Mix in the paprika and flour and stir for another minute or so. Add the remaining ingredients, including the cooked aduki beans, plus enough reserved bean cooking liquid to half-cover the ingredients.

Stir well, cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding more cooking liquid if it gets too dry. Season with black pepper and parsley and serve with mashed potatoes, crusty bread, rice or couscous.

What Kind of Eater Are You?

Spotted this on the way to work this morning (subway, MetroNews):

  • Emotional: Will finish a bar of chocolate when they are upset or sad as they think this will bring them comfort.  If they feel nourished by something other than food, they will lose the need for this emotive connection.
  • Addictive: Once they have a peanut, they can’t stop and need another.  They are easily cured once they identify their trigger foods.
  • Ignorant: Are overweight and don’t know why as they are careful in terms of what they eat.  However, they swear by diet and low calorie products and think potatoes are the healthy vegetables (they are, just not a lot all the time, within a balanced diet).  They need to learn which foods are ok and which are not.
  • Habitual: Will eat whatever is on the table in front of them, good or bad.  Their bad habits (junk food, lack of exercise) must be changed into good ones (healthy snacks, daily work out).
  • Angry: Will want crunchy, chewy food as chewing helps release the relaxators in the jaw.  These eaters must find another way of expressing their anger than swallowing food.

I am the addictive.  I was just telling my bf that I’m not craving my beloved carrot cake lately.  I haven’t had it for a while and ta-da!  I bet though I’ll want more and more if I have a piece.  Same with poutine I think.  And McDs lol.  Not really though..depends.  What are you?

Immune System May Help Fight Obesity – Toronto Star

antibodies cartoon

Toronto Star, July 27, 2009 – Joseph Hall

Your immune system can target its own fat and could soon be manipulated to fight obesity and diabetes.  Constant overeating can overwhelm this natural defense but we can restart is correctly by a drug.  This drug could be an alternative to invasive procedures such as stomach stapling or the band.  The study done by Toronto researchers was published in Nature Medicine online July 26, 2009.

The reseacher’s theorize that this also suggests a reason why obesity leads to Type 2 diabetes.  Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system is not working properly and turns against the body, causing the body to not run normally.

A healthy immune system produces killer T cells which attack abdominal fat cells, much like it does bacteria.  This is the only known time when autoimmunity has a positive effect on the body!  However the immune system becomes overloaded with chronic overeating, and this beneficial process shuts down.  The fat cells become fatter, and inflammatory T cells (usually seen near wounds) take over the fat cells.  This could be the link to Type 2 diabetes.  (Side Note: “It’s been known if you have a serious wound, a serious tissue wound anywhere, you actually become insulin-resistant,” Dr. Hans-Michael Dosch, senoir editor of the research paper).

Type 2 diabetes, which often accompanies obesity.  It is caused by the body’s cells inability to take up insulin from the blood, whereas childhood Type 1 diabetes is caused by the lack of insulin produced by the pancreas.

The drug is already approved by Health Canada and is used in transplant patients, so the use of this drug to reboot the immune system could be in our near future!

Rich Roll was nearing 40, overweight, out of breath and lost.  Within 2 years he dropped 30lbs, went vegetarian, and competed in the Ultraman World Championships, a grueling 3-day endurance triathlon circumnavigating the Big Island of Hawaii.  It involves 6.2 miles of swimming, 260 miles of cycling and finishes with a 52.4-mile double marathon run. He placed 11th overall and was the third-fastest American.  Read his story here.  My. God.
