Resistance Bands

In order to use up all this empty space in my apartment I’ve started working out more at home.  I dusted off my resistance bands and realized how much I like them.  They are light (much easier to store at home then weights) and pack a powerful resistance.  They are very versatile.  All you have to do is youtube resistance bands and you can see how many different exercises you can do with them.  And they are cheap!

If I’m On My Feet All Day, That’s A Cardio Workout, Right?

I’m on my feet all of my 8 hour shift, and my legs were feeling it the first week of my new job.  So I thought that because I was on my feet and walking all day that that was enough of a workout.  Then I picked up the Women’s Health Training Guide and this question was in it:

Q: I’m on my feet all day.  Do I really need to hit the gym, too?

A: If you’re walking from 9 to 5 and the numbers on the scale are stagnant or heading in the wrong direction, then yes, a more intense workout may be in order.  Even walking nonstop, you wouldn’t burn much more than 500 calories in a typical workday.  Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of strength training followed by 20 minutes of intense cardio, such as intervals, three times a week.  You’ll get a metabolism boost and burn extra calories.

Push Up Variations

Sorry I’ve been MIA but I moved and started a new job.  I have lots of space in my new place so I’ve been doing more home workouts.  I’ve always liked the push-up so I’ve done some research on variations I can add to my home or gym workout.

8 Foods To Pack On Muscle

Men’s Health is very straight forward with what you need to do to build muscle.  Oxygen Magazine had an interesting article a few years ago about how to lose weight like a man.  It was funny how men can and will just do what you are supposed to.  More exercise – shoot some hoops.  Eat better – cut out the fast food and junk food.  Build muscle – up the reps and the weight.  I wish I had that determination!

Do I Have To Eat Breakfast If I’m Not Hungry?

Q: If I’m not hungry in the morning, do I have to eat breakfast?

A: Most nutrition experts believe that it’s important to start your day with a healthy breakfast, and lots of research bears this out. For instance, a 2005 study showed that women who did not eat breakfast took in an average of 100 calories more per day than women who did, and had 10 percent higher levels of insulin, 9 percent higher total cholesterol, and 17 percent higher LDL (“bad”) cholesterol than they would have if they’d regularly eaten morning meals. At that rate, these women could expect to put on a full 10 pounds over the course of a year and to increase their risk of heart disease and diabetes. Having said that, there are people who simply have no appetite in the morning. If your current eating pattern keeps you energized (and doesn’t cause overeating at night), then perhaps you really aren’t a breakfast person. If that’s the case, you may enjoy breakfast at any point during the day or skip it completely and double up on an afternoon snack.
