Can I Exercise While Sick?

Q: Should you work out when you have a cold? Anything special to keep in mind?

A: The rule of thumb for exercising while sick is called the above/below-the-neck rule. If your symptoms appear above the neck (runny nose, sneezing, sore throat), then yes, you can continue with a low-intensity workout. Studies have shown that exercising at a moderate-intensity level does not intensify cold symptoms or compromise the immune system. Avoid high-intensity exercise, such as heavy weight lifting and high-intensity aerobic training, which has been shown to have a negative impact on the immune system during a cold or any respiratory infection.

If your symptoms are below the neck (diarrhea, intense coughing, vomiting, fever), then the American College of Sports Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest you let your illness run its course before resuming physical activity.

Leaner Butt and Legs Workout

From Women’s Health, here’s a sequence of 8 exercises to lean out and tone your lower half.  I like wood choppers.  You can even feel it in your abs and sides if you cross from left foot to over right shoulder, and vice versa for a modified version.

Are My Legs Bigger?

From EverydayHealth.com:

Q: I’m 5 feet 4, weight 123 pounds, and have a pear shape. My thighs have always been bigger than my hips. My arms are skinny and my stomach is flat. When I do leg exercises, my thighs get even bigger and my pants get tighter around the thighs. My diet is right on target. Any ideas?

A:  This is a common issue when doing weight training. Have you ever heard guys in the gym say they want to get a good “pump”? After a workout, the muscles you worked will swell as a result of fluid accumulation. This will occur almost immediately after exercise — which is why I never do a leg workout when I want to get into my skinny jeans on Saturday night! The swelling will gradually subside over the next several days.Don’t fret — as long as you are not eating more calories than you are burning in a day, you will not gain muscle mass or accumulate fat. And as you continue to lose weight, your legs WILL get smaller; it just takes time.

Take a Picture To See What You Really Look Like

joke

Alas, again from Men’s Health.  I’m not surprised as a lot of weight loss success stories start when a person is shocked to see themselves in a photograph.  I’m shocked when I look not fat in a photo!  Maybe I am kidding myself….

In a University of Kansas study, flabby guys were asked to pick an image that best represented their bodies. What they found: Obese men often believe they’re thinner than their doctors think they are. Researchers speculate you might deny the severity of a weight problem to boost your self-esteem.

A Leg Up on Watching Your Weight – A new study found lower-body moves burn more calories

running1

Here’s what arrived in my inbox today from Men’s Health.  Interesting.  Maybe 2 lower body workouts a week then?

To take inches off your waist, work the muscles below your belt. In a new Syracuse University study, people burned more calories the day after they did lower-body resistance training than the day after they worked their upper body. “Leg muscles—like your quads and glutes—generally have more mass than the muscles in your chest and arms,” says study author Kyle Hackney Ph. D. “Work more muscle, and your body uses more energy to repair and upgrade it later.”
