Exercise of the Week: Men’s Health

Single Shoulder Press and Lunge:

“This exercise combines a single-arm shoulder press with a reverse lunge. And while it takes a bit of practice to do smoothly, you’ll consider any time spent perfecting your technique to be a worthwhile investment. You see, pairing these two exercises not only allows you to simultaneously train your shoulders, hips, and thighs, but your abs, too. That’s because holding the weight on only one side of your body forces your core muscles to work overtime to keep you from falling over. So it’s a terrific all-in-one, time-saving exercise. Another bonus: Working all those muscles burns tons of calories, which is why it’ll help you strip away belly-fat, too.

Red Bull Can Make You Fat

“The science is in: Energy drinks are worse for your gut than soda, according to a team of researchers in New Zealand. Blame it on the sugar. The scientists observed that downing an energy drink containing 80 mg caffeine and 24 g sugar—about the amount in an 8.3-ounce can of Red Bull—completely inhibited people’s ability to burn fat. “While caffeine does help speed metabolism, combining it with sugar negates its short-term fat-burning benefits,” says lead author Elaine Rush, Ph.D.

I don’t drink these caffeine energy drinks.  Too sweet for me!  Does anyone drink them?

5 Food Scams To Know – Men’s Health

  1. Snack packs – just because food looks like a diet food, it’s not.  It’s a small snack pack because it is bad for you!
  2. Zero Trans Fats – they are allowed to have no more than 0.5g of trans fats and still call it free.  Trans fats are bad.  Take in no more than 2.5g a day.  Check to see that the label doesn’t have the words “partially hydrogenated” or “shortening” or “interesterified”.
  3. “Whole” in front of grains.  Check the ingredients list for “whole grains” as a primary ingrediant, rather than far down the list, behind sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, or enriched wheat flour. 
  4. Fast food salads.  They’re toppings can be as bad as a side of fries.  Make your own!

Portion Control Tips

Hello!

Tomorrow is the day I meet with my personal trainer/nutritionist for the first time.  I am excited!

I know he’s going to say my weakness is portion control…so to celebrate getting a trainer, here are some portion control tips!

Also, a question from EverydayHealth.com regarding portion control:

Q: I keep hearing that the key to good dieting is portion control. Do you have any tips on how to put that into action?

A: I sure do! Many times we eat out of boredom, loneliness, or just because the food is in front of us. Until you have developed stronger discipline (and you will, but it takes some time), you might have to outsmart yourself to keep your portion sizes under control. Here are some ways you can do that:Try using a smaller plate. If you use paper, avoid the really large sizes and go for the medium and small plates. This way you’ll be controlling your portions without even realizing it. If you’re using regular plates, take out the salad plates and use them for your main dish.

When you’re cooking, go heavy on the veggies. Vegetables can fill you up — with good stuff — and make you less hungry for that second bowl of carbs or fatty food. This is a calorie-safe method to satisfy your appetite.

Ever notice how full you are after eating something hot? If you begin your meal with soup, you’ll find that you’re a lot less hungry for what follows. Soup is also a fantastic way to get vitamins into your meal — and it can last for a long time in the freezer.

Go easy on the helpings. If you know you’re likely to eat whatever you take, try to limit your first serving. You’ll probably find that once you attune yourself to gauging how hungry you really are, you’ll no longer need a heaping first serving, let alone a second.
