It’s out!

Covergirl Erin Stern:

A typical workout includes “I train five to six days per week,” Erin says. “Usually a combined bodybuilding-style weight workout four times per week, functional powerlifting once or twice, and sprints and plyo on the track.”

Of all the exercises she does, her top training moves right now are reverse hyperextensions, weighted bridges and single-leg squats. “Gotta work those glutes!”

Drinking for Weight Loss?

alcohol

Funny, these two articles came in the same newsletter from EverydayHealth.com!

Can Alcohol Derail You Diet?  Sugars from alcohol can add up if you imbib in one after work every night.  Switch to wine, then wine spritzer and maybe you’ll be satisfied in a few weeks with just club soda and a lemon!

  • Light beer, 12 oz, 90 to 110 calories
  • Regular beer, 12 oz, 150 calories
  • Red wine, 5 oz, 120 to 150 calories
  • Rum or whiskey, 1.5 oz, 98 calories
  • Gin, 1.5 oz, 120 calories
  • Vodka, 1.5 oz, 98 calories
  • Now add in the sugary mixes! Juices! Pops! Rimmers!

    Drink To Your Health

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot about how good alcohol is for your health — but I always thought it was unhealthy to drink. Can you explain this?

A: After reports were released suggesting that alcohol has a protective effect on the heart, many people I know jumped for joy and cheered, “Finally something seemingly sinful is good for me!” In fact, a moderate amount of alcohol can be good for your heart health. Research shows that drinking any type of alcohol in moderation can lower your risk of stroke, raise good cholesterol (HDL) levels, and lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. And red wine contains antioxidants that can further protect the heart. So go ahead and enjoy your wine with dinner. To stay in balance, switch your glass of wine for your dinner roll or other starch serving. But stay sober! Once you drink past the point of moderation (which is defined as one drink a day for women, and two for men), alcohol’s benefits are quickly swallowed by its risks. Heavy drinking can really take a toll, leading to liver disease, stroke, cancer, and many other ailments. Alcohol also has plenty of calories. So if you don’t drink, don’t start. But if you do, enjoy — just take it easy.

    Portion Control Tips

    food scale

    Hello!

Tomorrow is the day I meet with my personal trainer/nutritionist for the first time.  I am excited!

I know he’s going to say my weakness is portion control…so to celebrate getting a trainer, here are some portion control tips!

Also, a question from EverydayHealth.com regarding portion control:

Q: I keep hearing that the key to good dieting is portion control. Do you have any tips on how to put that into action?

A: I sure do! Many times we eat out of boredom, loneliness, or just because the food is in front of us. Until you have developed stronger discipline (and you will, but it takes some time), you might have to outsmart yourself to keep your portion sizes under control. Here are some ways you can do that:Try using a smaller plate. If you use paper, avoid the really large sizes and go for the medium and small plates. This way you’ll be controlling your portions without even realizing it. If you’re using regular plates, take out the salad plates and use them for your main dish.

When you’re cooking, go heavy on the veggies. Vegetables can fill you up — with good stuff — and make you less hungry for that second bowl of carbs or fatty food. This is a calorie-safe method to satisfy your appetite.

Ever notice how full you are after eating something hot? If you begin your meal with soup, you’ll find that you’re a lot less hungry for what follows. Soup is also a fantastic way to get vitamins into your meal — and it can last for a long time in the freezer.

Go easy on the helpings. If you know you’re likely to eat whatever you take, try to limit your first serving. You’ll probably find that once you attune yourself to gauging how hungry you really are, you’ll no longer need a heaping first serving, let alone a second.
