Reasons Why You’re Still Hungry After You Eat

  1. You drink soda – fructose tricks your brain into craving more food.
  2. Eating canned food which contains BPA – which increases leptin, a hunger hormone.
  3. Breakfast wasn’t big enough or you didn’t eat at all!
  4. You don’t eat your veggies which are high in Vit B and K which protect against weight gain and insulin spikes.

Drink Water: Water helps skin glow, stay moisturized and supple and helps keep you from bloating.

Sunscreen: Keep your skin looking beautiful forever.

Exfoliate: Keep a loofah handy and go over everything every 2 days. 

Moisturize: After every shower or bath, moisturize using a body butter or baby oil.  If you don’t need that heavy of a moisturizer, use a lighter lotion product.

Self Tan: Use an at-home product or splurge for a self tan (handy for vacations as they usually last a week).

1. Before you apply any self tanning lotion or spray, rub yourself smooth.  While you’re in the shower, exfoliate; pay special attention to areas with rough skin like elbows, knees, ankles and heels. Dry off well – water can prevent the tanner from absorbing evenly – and keep skin lotion-free.

2. Begin at the bottom when applying your self tanning products. To prevent creases on your stomach and back caused by bending over while your self-tanner is still wet, apply product to your feet and legs first, then move upward. A new breed of spray-on self-tanners and bronzers are so light, they dry in about two minutes, meaning you can literally spray and go.

3. Layer on several coats of self tanning lotion or spray. To achieve deep color, apply two or three thin coats (as you would nail polish) and wait 10 minutes for each to dry. If you apply self-tanner in thick layers, it will drip and streak. Try tinted formulas; they allow for more accurate application.

4. Go easy on your face, no matter which type of self tanning products you’re using. Avoid self-tanner on the face. Because the skin on your face is oilier and the pores larger, the color often ends up uneven. A more flattering option is bronzer.

5. Prolong your tan with oil. Maximize the life of your faux glow by smoothing on baby oil before hitting a cool-to-warm shower (avoid hot water, as it can dry out the skin and make your tan blotchy). Oil acts like plastic wrap around your skin and minimizes exfoliation caused by the pelting water. The oil will wash off and your tan will stay put.

Misc.:

Nails: Tidy up the toes and the fingernails…but especially the toes.  No one likes seeing gnarly toe nails with chipped polish.  Ewww….

Hair: Definitely low maintenance…caps are cute, braids, beachy waves (scrunge after getting hair wet).

  • Instead of a flour tortilla, order lettuce.
  • Instead of cheese, order guacamole.
  • Instead of ground beef, shredded pork.
  • Instead of black beans, order pinto beans.

Atkins Diet Gets An Update

The high protein low carb diet born of the 70s and highly critized (especially since the author died of heart disease!) gets an update.  The new version includes more veggies but it still pretty low carb.  I guess they are trying to address some of the criticisms.  Check it out here.

Steaming Vegetables

Vegetables are a staple for any diet…I’ve upped my intake and now steam my veggies in the microwave.  I take about 3 meals and 1 snack to school/work with me (per my nutritionist).

On the Stovetop:

  1. Add one or two inches of water to a large pot and bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Prepare your vegetables for cooking: After washing thoroughly, cut them into equal-sized pieces to ensure even cooking.
  3. Place your steaming basket (a specially designed tool that fits inside a pot and holds food just above the surface of the water) in the pot of water. Or use a bamboo steamer, which sits above steaming water
  4. Add vegetables and cover.
  5. Cook until vegetables reach the desired texture. In general, most vegetables require only one or two minutes of steaming, since steam is even hotter than boiling water. If you like your veggies tender, cook a little longer; if you prefer crunchy veggies, cook for a shorter period. Be careful not to overcook, or you’ll end up with mushy vegetables.
  6. Carefully remove the lid (remember, the steam can burn your hands!) and take the vegetables out of the basket. Serve them immediately with a South Beach Diet–friendly sauce or seasoning, including lemon juice and any spice (that doesn’t contain added sugar) or with fresh chopped herbs, such as parsley or basil.

In the Microwave:

  1. Prepare your vegetables for cooking: After washing thoroughly, cut vegetables into equal-sized pieces to ensure even cooking.
  2. If you have the plastic bags made especially for microwave steaming, follow the directions on the box; otherwise place vegetables in a large, microwave-safe bowl (a glass bowl, for example) and follow the rest of the steps below.
  3. Add water to cover your vegetables — the water should be shallow in the bowl.
  4. Cover the bowl with microwave-safe plastic wrap and fold back in one spot to allow steam to vent.
  5. Microwave on high for four to eight minutes (depending on the thickness of the vegetables) or until your veggies reach the desired texture. Serve with a South Beach Diet–recommended sauce or seasoning.
