Bottled Teas Low On Antioxidants

“Bottled teas may be refreshing on a hot summer day, but most do not provide the health benefits of a single cup of steeped tea, according to a new study.

More than half of 49 bottled teas tested by researchers at a U.S. dietary supplement company contained less than 10 milligrams (mg) of antioxidant polyphenols. A typical cup of steeped tea has 50 to 100 mg. Research has shown a minimum of 125 mg daily is needed to provide health benefits.”

Vegetabale Pita Pizza

 

Vegetable Pita Pizzas

  • 2 large pita, whole-wheat
  • cooking spray
  • 1/2 cup(s) assorted fresh vegetables (such as small broccoli or cauliflower florets, red sweet pepper strips, sliced fresh mushrooms, and/or chopped carrot)
  • 1/4 cup(s) pizza sauce
  • 1/4 cup(s) cheese, mozzarella, shredded
1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Place pita bread rounds on a baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, coat an unheated small skillet with nonstick cooking spray. Preheat over medium heat. Add the vegetables; cook and stir until crisp-tender.

3. Spread pizza sauce on pita bread rounds; sprinkle with cooked vegetables and cheese. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes more or until light brown. Serve warm.

Guidelines for Fitness

Here is what the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommends for adults in order to maintain a healthy fitness level:

  • At least 2 hours and 30 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic workouts, such as brisk walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic workouts like running or jogging
  • For even better results, about 5 hours a week of moderate workouts or 2 hours and 30 minutes of vigorous workouts
  • On top of these aerobic activities, strength-training workouts at least twice a week that involve all major muscle groups

Quit Yo-Yo Dieting

Yo-yo dieting is bad and habit-forming.  From EverydayHealth.com, here’s how to avoid it:

Skipping meals. “Are you eating small, frequent meals throughout the day, or are you skipping meals and having long gaps between meals?” Gans asks. “That only makes you hungrier, and you’ll tend to overeat at your next meal.”

Eating out without thought. “Do you dine out all the time and use that as an excuse not to make healthy choices at a restaurant?” Gans asks. “Even when you’re dining out, you can make healthier choices. Order broiled food, not fried. Say no to desserts. Have a bowl of berries instead of pie. Order sauces on the side.”

Keeping unhealthy foods in your house. As part of a smart weight-loss program, you should clear out all the junk food and make sure you have a wealth of healthy options available for snacking and dining. “You need to keep fruit, vegetables, low-fat dairy in the house so it’s there for you to make meals out of,” Gans says. Simply limiting some foods, such as soft drinks, that are high in sugars may help you significantly reduce calories.

Keep your portions small. One quick way to control weight is to cut back on the size of your portions. Many personal weight-loss programs fail because people ladle out way too much food for themselves and then feel compelled to clean their plates.

Jillian Michaels Tips to Control Hunger

Don’t skip meals. You should be eating three square meals a day, plus one snack, and spacing your meals throughout the day so that you don’t go longer than four hours without eating. This will keep your blood sugar levels and hunger hormones stable.

Drink tons of water. When you feel as if you’re starving, pour yourself a huge glass of water or grab a bottle of seltzer — it will help quell the urge to snack.

Sleep! Two hormones, leptin and ghrelin, regulate our appetite, and both are directly affected by how much sleep we get. These hormones work in a kind of “checks and balances” system to control feelings of hunger and fullness. Getting eight hours of shut-eye each night helps the hormones work properly, which in turn will help curb your appetite.

Examine your hunger. The next time you feel hungry between meals, consider the last time you ate. If it was less than three to four hours earlier, your stomach isn’t growling, and you’re not weak or tired, you’re probably emotionally unsatisfied in some way rather than genuinely physically hungry.

Think about what, besides eating, soothes you. Steer yourself toward positive feelings of self-worth and you’ll choose activities and behaviors that inherently contradict self-loathing and self-destructiveness.

Don’t panic. You can and will lose weight. Even if you’re eating a little more than the meal plan calorie allowance, you can still lose — it just might take a little longer. Exercise is also crucial. Working out harder and more often will help burn the extra calories you might take in if you have a bad day.

Do not beat yourself up! Sometimes we slip up, and that’s okay — healthy living is not an all-or-nothing proposition. I’m here for you, and I know you can do this. Believe in yourself and try to incorporate my suggestions into your life, and let’s see how you do.
