Burn More Fat

From Women’s Health, check out the link here for the details.

  1. Go to bed earlier
  2. Eat more protein
  3. Go organic. “Canadian researchers report that dieters with the most organochlorines (pollutants from pesticides, which are stored in fat cells) experience a greater-than-normal dip in metabolism as they lose weight, perhaps because the toxins interfere with the energy-burning process. In other words, pesticides make it harder to lose pounds.
  4. Stop sitting. “Missouri University researchers discovered that inactivity (4 hours or more) causes a near shut- down of an enzyme that controls fat and cholesterol metabolism.”
  5. Drink cold water.
  6. Eat spicy-hot food.
  7. Eat breakfast.
  8. Drink caffeine for a metabolism jolt.
  9. Eat more fiber.
  10. Eat iron-rich food.
  11. Get vitamin D.
  12. Drink milk. (low fat, though…)
  13. Eat watermelon. “The amino acid arginine, abundant in watermelon, might promote weight loss, according to the Journal of Nutrition.”
  14. Stay hydrated.

New Canadian Fitness Guidelines

…have been released this Monday!  Click here for the full article.

“The guidelines, released Monday, call for an hour a day of moderate to vigorous activity for children and teens ages 5 through 17. That doesn’t mean just strolling to school, but exerting themselves enough to sweat a little and breathe harder through activities like bike riding, skating or running around the playground.

At least three days a week, kids and youth should also engage in tougher exercise that makes them sweat and get out of breath, like running, swimming or rollerblading, the guidelines say.

Adults and seniors need 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity, or a total of 2.5 hours a week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more.

They are also advised to add muscle and bone-strengthening activities using major muscle groups at least twice a week.”

Spinach The Superfood

Spinach! From Chatelaine

  1. Spinach is an excellent source of calcium: By supplying 100mg of calcium in every 100g serving, spinach is an excellent alternative to dairy for its ability to support healthy bone growth and prevent the onset of osteoporosis.
  2. Spinach can help you relax: Spinach is one of the highest sources of dietary magnesium. Magnesium is necessary for smooth muscle relaxation of the arteries, as well as for hormone development in our adrenal glands to cope with high stress levels.
  3. Spinach is high in folate: Folate is important for everyone, but necessary for expectant mothers to ensure proper neurological development of the fetus in early stages of growth. So stock up on spinach to nourish your baby’s nervous system!
  4. Spinach is a great source of protein: There may have been some truth to the old Popeye cartoons. Spinach is one of the only vegetarian sources of protein that contains a complete amino acid profile to rebuild muscle tissue and support collagen growth, which helps to maintain healthy skin and mobile joints.
  5. Spinach can help protect your eyesight: Spinach is high in lutein, a phytonutrient in the carotenoid family. Lutein specifically targets the eyes to avoid the macular degeneration associated with aging. It’s an antioxidant for the eyes that maintains healthy vision.

There are many ways to cook with spinach.  My fav way is just wilting it in a pan with a bit of spray or olive oil, salt, pepper and lemon juice.  Try it with garlic, mushrooms or with a peanut sauce.  Google “spinach recipes” and you come up with lots of ideas.  Also, add tore up pieces of spinach to pastas, soups and omelettes.

Vitaminwater Not Nutritious

Crazy.  Check out the article here.

“[C]onsumers would be surprised to find out their “nutritious” drink actually contained four to five teaspoons of added sugar.

The Vitaminwater label lists the amounts of specific medicinal ingredients in the beverage but only lists the presence of non-medicinal ingredients (like cane sugar and citric acid) and not how much has been added.

In reality, a 591 ml bottle of Vitaminwater contains about 33 grams of sugar, while a 355 ml can of Coke contains 39 grams”

Canadians Don’t Get Enough Exercise

This article describes a study shows that Canadians do not get enough daily exercise.

The Canadian government is coming up with updated physical activity guidelines in late January 2011.  Currently, to maintain a healthy weight you should get (as an adult) 60 minutes of activity each day.  That means heart-pumping, not just a stroll or standing.  To lose weight, that means 60 to 90 minutes of activity each day.

Tricks To Suppress Your Appetite

Women’s Health came out with these tips on how to (healthily) suppress your appetite.  Click the link to see their reasoning.

  1. Protein with breakfast
  2. Eat potatoes (with skins)
  3. Eat healthy fats
  4. Exercise (actually suppresses appetite and also makes you think twice about eating unhealthily…takes a lot of work to burn off 200 calories, less than a chocolate bar)
  5. Eat grapefruit (my fav fruit, top fav foods with olives and cottage cheese)
  6. Smell peppermint (vanilla, green apple or banana)

Work Out Sore Muscles?

From EverydayHealth.com:

Q: What are the rules for working out when you’re still really sore from the day before?
A: You should NOT train a muscle that’s sore. The reason for this is that your body interprets exercise as stress; it’s during the recovery time when the real work is being done. Think of exercise as the architect and recovery as the builder. If you work a muscle too soon after a training session, therefore, you will just break it down. Also, you shouldn’t be sore for more than two days after a workout; if you are, you may have a slight injury or muscle strain. If this is the case, take it easy and give that muscle time to heal before training it again.

I wonder how sore the contestants are on The Biggest Loser? They work out every day, no?
